I don't know about you but I'm getting pumped about football season. So excited that I'm back to painting football art. Capturing the motion as they dash for a TD and all the colorful uniforms makes these interesting subjects. I used a combination of acrylic paint and crayon on paper for this piece.

I've also included a video demonstration for your viewing pleasure. If you enjoy the new theme there will be plenty more of these around the corner. If not, don't worry I'm always going to sprinkle a few horse and cow paintings in there.

First of all I wanted to apologize to everyone about the glitches on yesterday's post. I copied and pasted the post from blogger where I still have my old blog and for some reason it shuffled the body text around. I fixed the errors and you should be able to reopen the post and see that it actually makes sense now. How embarrassing! This expressive painting was done in the comfort of my studio on 08-26-2010. I used acrylic paint and crayon on Bockingford watercolor paper for this mixed media painting. This may be my favorite painting for this theme to date. I can't tell you how good it feels to say that.

Horses have been my muse for many paintings but horse racing is a rather new subject. I became interested in horse racing when I was hanging out at my parents house this summer and I glanced over at the TV and the Churchill Downs happen to be on. I remember thinking how interesting and colorful this event was so I took note and started sketching the next day. The majority of these horse racing paintings end up in the recycle bin, but every once in a while I get lucky. New subjects will often riddle me until one day I have a breakthrough and become so confident in the subject that I can start to make it my own. Avoiding discouragement and sticking with the new subject is the key for success. It's important to keep pushing the art and challenging my skills every chance I get, and avoid those trite paintings that just seem too easy. While I may return to familiar compositions as a warm up, I try to remind myself to keep expanding by adding new subjects and techniques.

Ivory II was painted in my studio on 08-27-2010. I used a combination of acrylic paint and acrylic ink on archival paper with the assistance of a palette knife. The video demonstrates how using thick paint adds texture and gives me the option to scratch back into the paint thus creating some linear interest. I've really enjoyed making these demos and it's interesting how it makes me focus on the painting without getting distracted. My studio is in my home so it's easy to get caught up in domestic duties, or paint for a few minutes and go check my email, renew something in my Etsy shop, or adjust the radio. The videos really keep me dialed in to the painting and not get to fussy about the details. The decision making process is much easier and the painting flows much better. Look for plenty more of these in the future!

This was painted on 08-27-2010 in comfort of my studio. I've been painting plenty of Maine landscapes and cows so I decided to get back to some horse paintings. I used acrylic paint, crayon and ink on paper for this piece. The ink really made the difference! You can see the brown umber ink to the rear of the of the horse and in the shadows of the neck. Once the painting dried it seemed flat in these area and the acrylic ink is a great way to add some depth to the color without going overboard. I also like how the ink adds some transparency and this can be seen in the neck area where it layers over the white paint and breaks up the color.

This is another expressive cow painting that is salvaged from the recycle bin. As you watch the video you'll notice when I start the painting already has some color on it. That is the result of a painting gone bad but I rarely toss anything in the trash but rather save them for a later date. For some reason it's easier for me to start with a reject painting instead of a fresh white piece of paper that seems to be glaring at me. Maybe it's less intimidating and I don't feel the pressure of having to paint a great painting from nothing, or maybe I enjoy taking an inferior painting and making good of it. I guess an art therapist would know but for now it remains a mystery.

This painting is a combination of acrylic paint and crayon on archival watercolor paper. My inspiration for painting cows started when I was plein air painting last year and decided to stop one day at Indika Farms in Windsor, Virginia. After spending several hours sketching I became intrigued by the subject and have enjoyed painting them since that day.

My cow and horse paintings have become so popular that I've neglected one of my favorite subjects. I realized this after watching some preseason football last week and decided to bring foot and baseball back to the easel. I love the uniforms and my technique and style really lends itself to the subject. This painting is a combination of acrylic paint, crayon and charcoal on archival 140 lb. watercolor paper. This painting is a combination of acrylic paint, crayon and a touch of charcoal. It was painted in my studio on 08-22-2010. If you've followed my blog for a while then you know cows are one of my favorite subjects. It's probably due to the fact that I've painted hundreds of cow paintings and once I become familiar with the subject I start to realize how much I can abstract it. If I tried to paint chickens tomorrow it wouldn't come as easy as cows since I don't know what I can, and can't get away with. I like to abstract the subject as much as possible without losing the essence of the subject.

This is painting is a combination of acrylic paint and crayon on watercolor paper. Cows are one of my favorite subjects second only to old fishing boats. My main focus was capturing the stance and markings on this curious country creature. I'm still exploring with impasto techniques but only in a few areas of the painting. One thing I love about acrylics is the fast drying time. Oils would take weeks while this was dry within a few hours. I've included a few close-ups so you can better see the texture of the paint and brushwork.

This is a studio painting that was painted on 08-19-2010. I started the painting several weeks ago and like many paintings I discarded it because I didn't know how to finish it. As I was thumbing through the rejects this piece caught my eye so I decided to pop it up on the easel. The green really caught my eye and I remembered that's why it ended up tossing it aside the first time. But with a new day brings a different attitude and what I didn't like before seemed very appealing now.

I added some off-whites to the background, some darks to the mane and this painting started to come alive. I really like the zigzag crayon stokes in the face and neck and of coarse the green which you can see in the close-ups above. . As with yesterday's post I'm also incorporating some thick acrylic paint into my studio works. The texture really adds to the finish so long as I don't overdo it.

I thought I would take a break from the plein air Maine paintings and get back to some animal art. This painting was done in my studio yesterday and is a combination of acrylic and watercolor paint. I also utilized a palette knife to get the lighter linear strokes by scratching back into the wet paint. You can see this better in the close-up.

I've also been using the palette knife to add a thicker impasto style to a few of the cow's features. This close-up shows the texture achieved by this in the cows face.

Both techniques add to the finished painting. I often get bored with just slapping paint on the canvas and I'm always looking for an interesting technique that will change the course of a painting. These two techniques are current favorites but I'm sure there will be news ones around the corner.

This is another plein air painting from my Maine vacation a few weeks ago. Although I prefer the white lobster boats I decided I wanted to show some love for the back one with this painting. It was a hot and sunny day, well hot for Maine that is, and the paint was drying really fast. Now that I'm home and looking back on the sessions I can see how the painting takes on a much different look when compared to a painting done on a foggy, or damp day. You can look at Monday's post to see what I'm talking about. In damp conditions the paint dries much slower and my colors seem to blend together, where dry conditions like today's post will have a staccato feel to them. That's the wonderful thing about plein air painting that really makes it interesting and unique from a studio environment where the conditions, lighting, etc. are usually the same, or can be controlled.

This painting was done while on vacation in Stonington, Maine. I discovered this spot last year and decided to return since if offered such panoramic views of the harbor and town. I'll start a three part recap of the Maine vacation starting tomorrow. There are a few good stories as well as some great photos that I'm sure will fuel some studio sessions in the near future and provide some viewing pleasure for you.

This painting is a combination of watercolor, conte' crayon and white acrylic paint. My focus was capturing the layers of of coastal homes and lobster shacks that seem to fade into the distance. It was a foggy morning but the foreground elements were pretty close so I added a touch of color to the house.

Similar to yesterday's post this piece was painted on my last day in Stonington, Maine. It was a foggy morning and the cove was littered with boats. I'll do a separate post this week on our Maine vacation and include some pictures and short stories. Back to the painting. I used a combination of watercolor, conte' crayon and white acrylic paint on archival watercolor paper. Like many of my sessions I paint rapidly which results in some good spontaneous loose works, or a pile of mud. The mud paintings are recycled down the road and usually end up as a cow painting.

This is another small plein air Maine landscape painting I did while on vacation. As with the previous posts I'm not really trying to capture the exact scene that was in front of me but rather the essence of the moment. I've always loved the cluster of coastal homes that seem to be tucked into the hillside safe from stormy weather. And how the boats absorb the choppy seas as is if offering protection to the coastal community. Stonington is a special place and one that I could paint all day long. I've been pretty busy since returning from vacation so my studio time has been limited. This week looks much better so you can plan on seeing more studio works Maine.

This piece is painted from the same location as yesterday's post. I'm a sucker for a white lobster boat so my focus on this piece was exactly that. Sometimes when I plein air paint I use the scene to inspire me and from there I just start painting without referring to the subjects in front of me. This worked well since the boats tend to shift all the time with the current and tide. Sometimes just being there is all the inspiration I need and I hope I did the scene some justice.

I used a combination of watercolor and acrylic paint on archival paper. This small painting would be well suited in any room and would give you a subtle reminder of the beautiful Maine coast.

This is another plein air painting from my vacation to Maine. I discovered a great spot to paint during last years visit and decided to return for another session. It offers fabulous panoramic views of the harbor and plenty of subjects to choose from. It was early evening which gave the series of trees along the right a dark green tone that contrasted well with the blue glow of the water. My focus was capturing that contrast and adding a few other harbor elements . I used a combination of acrylic paint and charcoal for this one just to change it up from the watercolors and crayon from the other sessions.

This scene was painted in the same location as yesterday's post. I also used the same medium which is watercolor, crayon and white acrylic paint. The session was fantastic and I could have painted there all week long, but vacation also means doing other activities like spending time with family and sightseeing. It's always nice to come home and to have these paintings to reflect on and to remind me of the beautiful moments spent painting in plein air. My fiance' and I have decided to make Maine an annual trip and we'll probably do a foliage trip next year. I would love to spend a month there during the cold season but rentals are tough to come by that time of the year.

This scene was painted in plein air in Stonington, Maine. I discovered a small cove which rewarded me with splendid views of the town and harbor. It was a great place to set up my easel and gave me an opportunity to paint for several hours without interruption. I used a combination of watercolor, crayon and white acrylic paint. I didn't sketch or plan this painting, instead I set-up my goods and went for it. The town with it's clustered homes was my main focus. After splashing down several strokes of watercolor I added some crayon to help me define a few homes and the lobster boat. I continued with the watercolors and a few touches of white acrylic paint for highlights. I'm very satisfied with the final result and feel I captured the character of the town and harbor.

I spent my first morning in Stonington, Maine revisiting my favorite plein air spot from last years vacation. I discovered this secluded spot while walking around town and decided it would be a great place to start. It was a Sunday morning so all the boats were in the harbor since no lobster fishing is allowed and I had plenty of subjects to choose from. The most difficult part of plein air painting is not getting overwhelmed with all the clutter. This scene was littered with other boats, buoys and rocks but I decided on which ones to include early on so that I didn't end up with a busy painting. The scene to me was a peaceful and quiet one so I wanted that to come through in the final painting. Yesterday was a catch-up day so I didn't have an opportunity to photograph the new plein air paintings from my Maine vacation. However, today looks wide open so look for new works starting tomorrow. It was a fabulous vacation and I'm glad to be home safely. We couldn't have asked for better weather and my daughter did fabulous on her first vacation. At three and a half months she was able to survive the sixteen hour road trip to and from Maine and everything in between. I'm looking forward to putting together some posts that will describe my vacation and time spent plein air painting. I discovered some great new spots and revisited some oldies but goodies. I'll probably start tomorrow with the recap but in the meantime here is a blast from the past that I'm sharing with you until I have a chance to photograph my plein air paintings from Maine. These boats were painted in plein air in Newport News, Virginia.

Another day, another painting;. This cow is a combination of mixed media including acrylic paint, acrylic ink and crayon. I've been using several new techniques recently and I'm enjoying the thick impasto style which allow me to explore with some scratch-back options. If you check out the close-up you'll notice the thicker paint, especially on top of the head. Those globs of paint are give me the opportunity to use an over-sized paper clip, which I need to get a pic of so I can show it to you, or a palette knife to scratch-back in to the paint. It's a great way to add linear and random strokes to the painting without cluttering it with too much color or crayons.

Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and if you're like me and live on the east coast you were able to stay cool. I spent the majority of my time realizing that I know very little about designing a web site with Word press. And the days of thinking I was just going to download Thesis 1.7 and start clicking my way to a beautiful web site are long gone. Fortunately the forums and You Tube exist and help is always just a few tabs over.

So I'll be off to Maine Thursday for a much needed vacation. We'll be visiting Stonington which is located on Deer Isle and probably my favorite town in The US. Sorry west coasters but I haven't spent much time out there and I'm sure every state has a cool town like Stonington, but as far as I'm concerned this place is eureka. It will be my daughters first vacation and our first with her so I'm very excited about that and I'm sure the camera will be click nonstop. I'm also looking forward to some plein air painting and some cooler temps to boot.

Oh yeah, the cow painting. Sorry I got distracted there but at least you're up-to-date. This is one of those paintings that I liked but knew it wasn't where it needed to be so I hung it up in the studio for a few days until I realized the background was too dark. Adding the green to the background really softened it up and helped balance all the energy in the cow. There's a lot going on there and the previous background just didn't work

This lovely cow incorporates acrylic inks and paints and is loaded with texture. I've been exploring with applying paint with an over sized paperclip that works similar to a palette knife. I guess I could use a knife but it's the unconventional approach that excites me. I'll try to get a pic of it on the next post but for now you'll just have to use your imagination.

Apart from the painting I've been plugging away at a new web site and should have a rough draft up and running soon. I'll be asking for some feedback so be prepared to put your web site expertise hats on and give me some constructive advice.

Another day, another fresh painting for my viewers. I'm enjoying resurrecting paintings from my reject pile and this is another example of why I never throw away inferior works. I incorporated a touch of green crayon before adding layers of thick acrylic paint. The linear strokes were added using a liner brush and thinned out gesso. I'm also exploring with an over-sized paperclip to scratch-back into the thick paint which adds texture to the finished painting.

I'm still working on resurrecting some of my reject paintings and this painting is another example why I never toss them in the trash can. I used heavy body acrylics and some artist grade crayons for most of the painting but the scratch back techniques really helped in keeping this painting together. To scratch back most artists use a palette knife, or the handle end of a brush but I prefer an over sized paper clip which has a rounded end to it which results in a variety of line thickness. I'll try to include a pic in the next post.

This painting is also from the reject pile but I only added a few strokes to fiish it. I will usually take the reject and paint something totally different than the original composition. This time I really enjoyed the existing painting but thought it needed a pop to bring it around. I happen to have some gesso on my table which was thinned out with some water. I dipped the entire liner brush into the gesso leaving only about an inch of the handle so I could hold it. This allowed me one shot at adding the white lines to the cows face and just enough extra to sling some here and there just for fun. Once I added these stokes I thought the painting looked great and decided it was finished.

This piece is painted with a combination of watercolors, acrylic inks and paint. I've limited the palette to four watercolors, three acrylic paints and two inks. My focus was the composition and trying to balance both sides with some abstract and bold brushwork. Although the horse face is dominant on the right side the abstract brushwork has a way of balancing the composition. I love the results and hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I used a palette knife to scratch back into the thick paint which flows well with the horse's mane. The close-up images show this better. It's on a larger scale than I normally paint which really allowed me to work the loose strokes. I don't often paint this large because it can be difficult to store lager works, but occasionally it exciting to give it a shot.

This is another painting salvaged from the reject pile. I began by clipping the inferior painting to the easel and taking a few steps back. I like to let my imagination work at this point by using the existing shapes to discover a new subject. Cows and horses are my recent inspirations so I tried to rotate the painting until I could discover a good starting point. Once I found the composition I added some red and orange acrylic inks to the body. I used green, red and blue to create the darker tones being sure to blend it into the reds. I added a touch of crayon to the left side of the body and neck to help define the body. Using a variety of colors and mixing them with white acrylic paint I added some colors to the background and the horse started to appear. To finish the painting I scratched into the thick acrylics and inks using an oversized paper clip. Scratching back is a great way to add some linear movement to the finished painting. If you notice the neck area you will see the light yellows that were part of the original painting (the rejected one) and now plays a key role with the new one.

This is another example of a painting that was salvaged from the reject pile. I rarely throw away inferior paintings since the paper is still workable. I took the reject and clipped it to the easel, took a few steps back to explore the shapes. I could make out a cow through the existing painting so I immediately picked up a few crayons and started to define the subject with zigzag strokes. Once I could see the perimeter of the cow I reached for some white acrylic paint and chiseled in the background. I had a variety of inks on the table so I dropped a few colors on the palette to mix in with the white acrylic paint. The orange was already there from the previous painting and I decided to leave it alone since it worked well with the blue crayon. I added some darks to the subject and felt I had a painting worthy of a frame. I actually like this one a lot and it may be my favorite cow painting.

The original painting was a landscape gone bad and I decided to make a horse out of it. I'm so thankful for taking the opportunity to go bold and wreckless with the brushwork because this is one of my strongest works to date. The price is high for this one but well woth it. A stunning piece and a real show-stopper.

I enjoy getting out and plein air painting as often as my schedule allows. The most difficult aspect of for me is knowing what will make a good painting and taking the opportunity to pull over and set-up shop. Often I will end up driving around for hours before I finally find a subject that interests me. It's not uncommon to drive by potential scenes and keep going only to second guess myself for passing up on the chance to go for it. That's what happened with this painting. The old abandoned house is located just a few mile from my house and is situated at the end of a cul-de-sac which is a fantastic place to break out the easel. As I was driving around I noticed this house but decided to turn around to keep exploring. Once I was back at the main street I asked myself why did I not seize the opportunity to paint this old house. The light was good, the subject is interesting and the location is perfect. I waited for the traffic to clear and I made a u-turn and headed back. I'm delighted I did and it turned out to be a perfect plein air session. I did a few small sketches before I broke out the full sheet of paper and painted this gem. I also discovered some other interesting houses later that day and plan on returning soon.

My focus was to abstract this horse as much as possible. The challenge for me is not to go too far but far enough not to end up with a stiff painting. I used a combination of Liquitex acrylic inks, artist grade crayon and heavy body acrylic paint to acheive a variety of texture. Another go-to-tool I can't do without is my is my liner brush which gives me the opportunity to create long, linear strokes, splatter, and the short dashes that are often in my paintings. These strokes are usually added towards the end of the painting and act as the stitching that holds the subject together.

Once I finished this painting I took a few steps back from the easel and noticed this horse reminded me of a knight that you would see on the chess table. Using a green toned canvas I started this one by adding a few strokes of crayon and oil pastel without being too concerned about the composition. Staying in the mid-tone area I added a variety of colors to the subject being sure to go beyond the intended area since I knew I had the lights and darks to chisel the final shape. The darkest darks and lighter tones were added to the cow and at this point it started to take shape. Once I took a few steps back I noticed several flat areas that needed some attention so I shored up those and signed this piece in the lower left-hand corner.

This mixed media painting incorporates oils pastels and a mixture of transparent and opaque acrylic techniques. I started with a green toned canvas and added a few strokes of pastel. Using some thinned out transparent red oxide I added some random color here and there trying not to stay within the lines. As the acrylic layers were added so was the thickness of the paint which really gave this cow a textured finish which I prefer for my canvas work. Using a loaded liner brush I splashed some color on the subject just to give it some extra energy and called it a day.

This piece was painted several weeks ago in the studio. I did a series of horses and my main focus was to work with green, yellow and orange with this one. This mixed media painting consists of watercolors, acrylic paint and charcoal. My main focus was keeping the brushwork loose and the colors crisp. I'm also incoporating charcoal which is a new medium and thought it would be a good idea since I often use a liner brush to acheive long linear strokes. The charcoal was added when the paint was tacky to the touch and the painting was finished by adding a few highlights and darks.

I've been leaning towards my abstract side since the birth of my daughter has limited my plein air work which tends to be a bit tighter. When I work in the studio my artist instincts go a bit wild and free which is a great thing and leads to some really stong works. My plein air works tend to be acrylic paint only while my studio works often incorporate oil pastels, acrylic inks, watercolor and crayon. Perhaps it's the smaller work space when plein air painting that limits my mixed media ability, or maybe I slow down some in the studio since I'm not racing the fast pace changes of outdoor elements. I enjoy both and look forward to getting back to some outdoor painting in the days to come meanwhile you can enjoy this loose and colorful studio horse painting.

This painting shows a variety of mixed media and scratch-back technique as well as a recycled painting from the reject pile. I forget what the original painting was but it obviously didn't make the cut and but was worthy of another attempt. Sometime the original painting is too layered and thick so I usually discard those into the dumpster but the others are always recycled for what I hope is a finished painting. Once I decided on the subject I started with thin transparent layers on acrylic and a few strokes of crayon. Proceeding with thicker acrylic mixed with white I started blocking in the cow by adding some of the background and mid tones of the subject. Stepping back I noticed it was time to add some darks and more oil pastels to anchor the cow which started to bring this painting to life. I finished with some highlights and some scratching back into the thicker paint with a palette knife and called it a day.

This painting is a mixture of acrylic, oil pastel and charcoal. I've been experimenting with some mixed media in the past few months and using the charcoal with acrylic paint is a new combination. I waited until the acrylic was dry before I added the charcoal and oil pastel. Once those were in place I added some more acrylic paint and felt this painting was complete.

This piece was painted a few weeks ago and is inspired from time spent at the cow farm. I always loved how the cows would stop grazing when I pulled up and became very curious. Some of them would pause for several minutes to see what I was up to, probably wondering if I had food for them. Others would move back into the field which often caused others to follow. Almost a group retreat which really would spoil my session before it started. I guess since I ruined their lunch they figured they would return the favor. A few times I had my easel set-up, water in the cans and paints on the palette and they would decide to head for the shade. But not always. As I returned more often they started to get familiar with me and lost their shyness which led to some good sessions.

This painting is inspired from my time spent plein air painting at some of the cow farms in Virginia. I'm very interested in the black and white dairy cows and they always reminded me of oreo cookies. Oil pastel, acrylic ink and paint were used in this painting to achieve the multiple layers and variety of strokes. I have a tendency to push a painting too far but on a good day I know when to stop. I think I hit the mark on this one and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

This is the second painting inspired from my half day trip to Monhegan Island last year. I did a few plein air sketches while I was there but took plenty of pictures to take back to the studio. This piece is inspired from my trip to Monhegan Island last summer. It was an interesting day trip to say the least. The weather forecast called for a sunny day but the Island had other plans. It rained the entire trip to the island and cleared up as soon as we arrived only to cloud over again. It seemed to repeat this pattern throughout the day but we still managed to hike a few trails and painted a few pictures. Speaking of painting I had taken all of my paint supplies in what seemed to be a suitcase size duffle bag and my wooden easel for the half day trip which was a huge plein air rookie mistake. I remember hiking some of the rugged trails with all this equipment thinking to myself that I had better paint something good or this is a bust.

The weather was so unpredictable and it seemed like every time I set my easel up the fog would roll in and the whole scene would change in a matter of seconds. I've never seen anything like it but I managed to do a few sketches and I took plenty of pictures for inspiration down the road. It was a beautiful trip despite the over-packing and a valuable lesson learned. I plan to get back to the island in August this time with a small back pack a jug of water.

This piece is inspired from a picture I took in York, Maine last summer while on vacation. The original picture is over-complicated with too much clutter but I was attracted to these two boats and the background. Without a preliminary sketch I started painting by adding the sailboat in the right-hand side of the foreground. From there I added the background and a touch of sky. The second boat on the left was placed before I raced across the paper with a variety of green, blue and grays. Once the first layer was tacky dry I continued with a thicker second coat of acrylic and a touch of charcoal just for the fun of it. I love the energy of this piece and it really sums up the fast paced style I prefer. I've tried to do pencil sketches to plan a painting but it bores me to no end. I admire artists that have the patience to work methodically but I just can't do it. I guess I rely on luck to some degree, but whatever it is I keep going back for more.

I'm getting very excited about my vacation to Maine in August so I broke out my sketches and pictures from last year and have started some new works to incorporate my new medium into landscapes. I'm sure I'll be doing lots of plein air painting so it's important to start working on scenery now to get reacquainted with Mainescapes . My recent studio works tend to be just one cow, or horse so getting back to this type of painting will be challenging but necessary if I want to incorporate more elements in my paintings.

I've been exploring with charcoal and watercolors and this is another example of the medium. I'm also including some acrylic ink and white acrylic paint that balances the overall opacity and transparency. I've always loved to doodle and draw so the charcoal is giving me a chance to have some fun with something I enjoy doing. I often use a liner brush in my work but it doesn't substitute for the linear effects of what charcoal can do to the finish of a painting.

Color was my main focus on this one. I was working in some earthy tones prior to this painting and I wanted to do one more before I washed the brushes. So I shuffled through the watercolors and chose several colors that would change the feel of the session. I also incorporated some charcoal and white acrylic paint just for the fun of it. I really like the spontaneous feel of this painting.

I've been exploring a new medium by incorporating charcoal, watercolors and white acrylic paint. I limit my palette to five watercolors so my color decision making becomes quicker. For me it's about capturing a quick sketchy type feel of the subject by keeping the brush moving at all times. Charcoal is added at the midpoint of the painting and I'm using the opaque white acrylic to soften some of the lines and edges.

I decided to go back to the horse racing series yesterday. Instead of starting the session with my typical acrylic I reached for three watercolors, four acrylic inks and white acrylic paint. I thought changing the palette and medium may spice up the session. I started by applying some thin layers of watercolor and a splash watered down white acrylic paint. Once that was dry I added some inks and more watercolor and mixed in some white acrylic painting in the background. To tie the background in I also added some white stripes and harness to the jockey. Once that was dry I added the darks and lightest lights which completed the painting to my taste.

This was the last of several paintings in the studio a few days ago. Like many last paintings they tend to be more abstract than the previous works of the day. This piece was painted in plein air a few days ago in Newport News, Virginia. I'm incorporating the mixed media techniques that I've been working on in the studio. It's easy to revert back to just acrylics in the field and at times I get distracted from using the inks and pastels since my work space is limited. In the studio I have a large table and glass palette so I can spread out my materials but in the field I have enough room for my water containers and palette so I have to keep my other materials in my bag under the easel. I just have to remind myself that they're available and to reach down once in a while to use them. I'll get better at it but I do feel the mixed media is a more unique style and worth the extra effort.

Although it's scallop season many of the boats were still in port so I had quite a few subjects to consider. This wasn't the exact scene but I tweaked a few things to help with the composition.

I decided to go back and explore this technique some yesterday. I start with a gray toned background and add some random strokes of oil pastels once it's dry. Using thinned out transparent acrylic paints I add some mid-tones to the cow being sure to lightly cover some of the oil pastels but without covering them completely. This softens the strokes just a bit a adds some layers to the final painting. Darks are added next which really start to bring the painting together. It's very important for me not to get carried away but do just enough to get the point across thus leaving some areas that appear more abstract. I continue with some opaque colors and highlights that complete the painting, well almost. Backing away from the easel I noticed the background was a bit flat so I added a few tonal variations here and there just to break up the blocks of color.

I finally got back to some plein air painting a few days ago and I returned to my favorite spot in Newport News, Virginia. If you're new to the blog you should know that I have a background in commercial fishing and spent two and a half years scalloping the Atlantic Ocean. It was hard work to say the least but the experience unforgettable. Scallop boats are interesting subjects to me and being back at the docks always brings back fond memories of time spent at sea.

I also had the chance to take my newborn daughter Olivia and fiance' Margaret with me for the session. Although Olivia slept most of the time I had a few minutes to show her some of the big fishing boats and expose her to the smells of the fish house. I think that's when she started to fuss and we packed up for the day.

Back to the cows. I decided to go with a dark body that would allow the lighter pastels to make a bigger impact. The most difficult part was not going overboard with the pastels and making sure I use a variety of strokes and lines. You can see that some lines are thicker while others are much thinner and this was possible with applying less pressure to the thinner lines.

That's right, I can paint other things besides cows, horses and boats. I noticed some ketchup bottles in the grocery store and thought they would make an interesting painting. Since I've been painting cows and horses for a while I decided it would be refreshing to give it a try. I really enjoyed trying to capture the reflections on the bottle and the shadow. This is a larger scale painting for only one object so I worked in a variety of tones in the background to make it more interesting.

This cow painting is inspired from time spent plein air painting at the cow farms in Suffolk, Virginia. I really live the splatters and splotches of color that help define the legs. I used a touch of acrylic ink to achieve some transparent shadows and highlights. I'm loving the acrylic inks and it's really added a nice touch to my paintings. It's always exciting to find inspiration in the materials and not rely so much on the subject. Composition has never been that important to me. When beginning a painting I usually find something interesting and start there versus trying to envision the entire scene and bringing it together as a whole.

This is another one of those paintings that just didn't appeal to me while it was on the easel. I remember looking at it and thinking it had some interesting elements but didn't have that 'wow' factor in my opinion. I was struggling with how to finish this painting but before I discarded it to the reject pile I decided to take a touch of lemon yellow and white and add a few lines here and there. This can be an act of desperation sometimes so I was careful not to go overboard. Once I added the lines I found the painting to be interesting in that unusual sort of way and more importantly, I liked it.

Just a few more notes about this painting. I did something different with my technique by adding some oil pastels to start the painting. This acted as a resist to the acrylic inks and watercolors and added a layer of transparency to the finish. These paintings are exciting to me because it opens the door for exploration and for me that's inspiring and keeps the process of making art interesting. I've never wanted to be an artist that settled in to one style or technique. I find that boring and feel the process of making art is more important than the art itself. I hope that makes sense.

I decided to focus more on the rider with this painting. All of the different positions are really interesting and I can start to focus more on some of the details in the silks. With the next few paintings I'm going to add some of the different patterns and colors I notice in the silks as well as capturing light on the jockeys face. I think this will add some depth to the painting without going overboard. Also, I'm loving all the drip marks on this one too and how the watered down transparent paints are applied over these in a way that the drips are still noticeable.

Still exploring the new subject and I decided to change my technique up just a bit with this new series. Instead of oil pastels I used my water soluble crayons and applied them first to the paper. This allowed for more subtle lines versus adding the oil pastels on top of acrylic where they would make more of an impact on the final painting. I also used watercolors instead of acrylic to achieve a sketchy feel versus the opaque look of acrylics. It's always interesting to make a change every now and then just to avoid getting in those ruts.
